Peter Maguire Scott, 69, from Hartlepool, was diagnosed with the terminal cancer in July 2013 after a biopsy at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough which was carried out after he visited his GP complaining of feeling unwell, tired and breathless.
Specialist lawyers at Irwin Mitchell’s Newcastle office have now secured an undisclosed settlement from his former employers, English Electric Company, where he worked from 1967 to 1968 and Richardsons Westgarth (Hartlepool) Ltd and their subsidiary R W Engineering, where he worked from 1968 until 1971.
During his employment with the companies, Peter was exposed to asbestos while working at nuclear power stations and gas plants, where he came into close contact with asbestos which was used to lag pipework.
He regularly worked near areas where lagging was going on in power stations, with laggers using pre-formed sections of asbestos lagging which released asbestos dust into the atmosphere when cut.
Peter was not warned of the dangers of asbestos or offered any form of breathing mask or respiratory equipment during his employment with the two firms, which meant he regularly inhaled the hazardous dust and fibres which has subsequently caused his mesothelioma.
