Newham Council Takes Action Over Health And Safety Concerns
Newham Council served a notice to stop The Golden Dragon takeaway in Plaistow from trading after concerns were raised regarding hygiene standards at the site.
The east London outlet was closed following an Order by Stratford County Court after investigators from Newham Council found a range of worrying issues, including mice droppings, cockroaches and food left to cool close to bags of rubbish.
It has been confirmed that the owners of the takeaway will be able to re-open if they undertake a deep clean of the site, as well as implement health and safety standards and pest control procedures. It is one of 31 businesses to be shut down by Newham Council this year in relation to hygiene problems.
Matthew Collins, principal environmental health officer for the council, said: “It's one of the worst cases I've seen in 12 years.
“There was a risk of food poisoning as well as contamination from the droppings and cockroaches.”

Expert Opinion
The reports and the accompanying images related to this case are concerning. All food outlets such as restaurants and takeaways have clear responsibilities in relation to food hygiene standards, yet time and again problems emerge as a result of owners failing to meet these requirements. <br/> <br/>"Food hygiene is an important issue and in our work, which includes cases both in the UK and abroad, we have seen how illness problems caused by poor hygiene standards can have long-term impact on the health of victims. <br/> <br/>"While it is welcome to see the Council in this case took action, it is vital that all food outlets recognise the importance of food hygiene and safety, to ensure that all customers are protected from any potential harm which can arise from failure to follow the appropriate standards."
