Humberside Police Dealt With 40 Accidents Caused By Icy Conditions In 24 Hours
Motorists Around the UK have been warned to remain vigilant and take more care when driving in wintry conditions, with a number of police forces around the country warning that many will face icy conditions in the coming weeks.
Temperatures around the country have been falling for several days and drivers have been warned to take extra care when getting behind the wheel. Incidents have been reported around the country including Humberside police saying they have dealt with 40 accidents caused by icy conditions in just 24 hours and a gritting vehicle even overturned in Sheffield over the weekend.
The advice includes reducing speed to allow for increased stopping distances, checking tyres and ensuring they are fit for use in cold weather and clearing windows of any ice to increase visibility.

Expert Opinion
All too often we witness the devastating impact collisions can have on those involved and in the winter months the number of accidents often rises steeply.
“As the weather begins to get colder and icy conditions begin to impact driving it is important motorists take action to increase road safety where they can, following sensible advice issued by the police and motoring organisations such as proper use of lighting, allowing for increased stopping distances in slippery conditions and maintaining their tyres so they are fit for use when the temperatures begin to drop.
“Already across the UK many incidents involving ice, particularly on the outskirts of the cities or in rural areas, are being reported. We hope that by taking more care and respecting other road users, the number of accidents over the winter months caused by adverse conditions will reduce and people will be better able to enjoy the festive season without the trauma of serious injury or even fatalities.” Neil Whiteley - Managing Partner, Technical Client Services
