Irwin Mitchell Sponsor Presentations and Provide Winner With Work Placement
Second year law students from Thomas Rotherham College were put to task by expert solicitors from Irwin Mitchell in a special Law competition.
The competition challenged the BTEC and A2 law students to investigate the law relating to murder which has been subject to much criticism over the years, not only in terms of structural and sentencing issues, but also the way in which certain defences have developed.
Expert lawyers from Irwin Mitchell helped to judge the competition. Mark Allen, an Associate Director in the workplace illness team, as well as Sinead Hayes, a solicitor and former student at Thomas Rotherham College, worked with Marie Clare, a tutor who specialises in Law at Thomas Rotherham College.
After several outstanding presentations, student Jon Earnshaw was named the winner for demonstrating extremely good research skills and attention to detail and has now been invited to complete a week’s work placement at Irwin Mitchell.
Runner up, Megan Burr, who impressed with her calm approach and ability to convey complex information without once referring to her notes received £50 in WH Smith vouchers.
Jon Earnshaw said: "Taking the challenge to tackle something so far removed from the ordinary curriculum tested everyone's mettle, and in coming through it we can all take pride in the energy and determination we displayed in doing so.
"Winning has taught me that however tough something looks, given the right attitude, you can overcome your demons and succeed."
Megan added: “I came second in the law competition which was far better than I anticipated I would do. The experience has been a real boost to my confidence and made me realise that presenting is not as scary as I originally believed.
"It was a great honour to be part of this competition and I am so glad I took part as it has improved my belief in my own work and my ability to present. The competition has given me a range of skills that I shall be transferring to other areas of my life".
Expert Opinion
The overall standard was excellent with all the presentations well-prepared and very professional. Jon’s presentation was excellent and of a high-calibre. He will now come to our offices and experience a week in the life of a lawyer which will hopefully help him as he continues his studies.

“At Irwin Mitchell we are really pleased to be involved in this kind of competition to help the next generation of legal talent to progress and share some of the knowledge we have learnt during our time working in the profession.”
