Medical Law Experts Say Plea Is First Step In Victims’ Battle For Justice
Specialist abuse lawyers acting in relation to the case of a GP who used a secret camera inside his wristwatch to record himself abusing female patients say his guilty plea today (15 March) is the first significant step in his victims’ battle for justice.
Dr Davinderjit Bains, a GP from Tinkers Lane Surgery in Royal Wootton Bassett, pleaded guilty to a total of 39 sexual offences and a further 65 sexual offences have been admitted and will be taken into consideration.
He has been remanded in custody following the hearing at Swindon Crown Court and will be sentenced at a later date.
NHS Wiltshire wrote to patients of the surgery last year and a helpline was set up to help people affected. The offences were committed against 30 women - aged between 14 and 51 - between July 2010 and May 2012.
Following the plea hearing detectives branded Bains a "sexual predator" and said he had "massively" breached the trust that patients place on their doctor.
Luke Daniels, a medical law expert at Irwin Mitchell acting on behalf of concerned patients, said: “This man massively abused the position of trust in which he was placed and carried out the most horrendous crimes that continue to have a devastating effect on the victims.
“Vulnerable patients put their trust in Dr Bains and he abused this in the most degrading way possible.
“His guilty plea today is the first significant step for the victims in their battle for justice, but many of these women continue to suffer psychologically as a result of the horrific abuse he carried out and now need specialist help.
“NHS Wiltshire, the local primary care trust, says it has conducted its own investigation to see what, if any, lessons can be learned from this and we urge it to now share the findings with patients at the surgery to reassure them everything is being done to prevent a similar atrocious crime from happening again.”
