Industrial Disease Experts Comment On Latest Findings
By Rob Dixon
Worrying occupational asthma statistics released this month following a study carried out by the Imperial College London highlight the “very real problems” that can arise when exposed to harmful substances at work, according to an illness lawyer at Irwin Mitchell.
The research looked at occurrences of asthma in a group of almost 9,500 people and found 18 occupations could be clearly linked to asthma, with four being cleaning jobs and another three likely to lead to exposure to cleaning products.
It also identified that farmers, hairdressers and printing workers were also found to have an increased risk of suffering from asthma, which backs up previous studies in relation to the issue.
The findings have been described by bodies including Asthma UK as the first of its kind, with the research providing valuable information for those concerned with reducing the incidence of asthma in adult life.
Irwin Mitchell’s specialist workplace illness team, who regularly act on behalf of those exposed to harmful substances at work welcome the publication of the research
Industrial disease specialist Alex Shorey, who is based at the national law firm’s Birmingham office, represents people who have suffered long-term health problems as a result of occupational asthma and other respiratory diseases developed during work.
Welcoming the publication of the study, Alex said “This study highlights the very real problems being experienced by workers who are exposed to potentially harmful substances on a daily basis.
“I would very much endorse the views of Asthma UK, particularly their thoughts that this study demonstrates the need for health professional to offer quick intervention and to provide clear advice to patients who may be displaying signs of occupationally induced asthma.
“Unfortunately here at Irwin Mitchell we come across many cases where clients have developed asthma as a consequence of their work in circumstances which may have quite simply been avoided had the correct information and warnings been given. This has been a growing trend with workers in both the cleaning and hairdressing sectors and who we are finding are increasingly exposed to these risks.
“Many workers are equally unaware of their eligibility for Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit, which in itself is an aspect which as a firm we look to assist clients with.
“It is hoped that research such as this serves to create a better understanding of the issues and ultimately leads to a more responsible and careful approach being adopted by all employers.”
