Flytipping Problems Demonstrate Importance Of Proper Removal Methods
By Rob Dixon
Legal experts specialising in helping victims of asbestos-related disease have urged people to recognise the importance of disposing of the deadly material in the proper manner, following reports over issues of flytipping in Swansea.
The city’s local authority has issued a warning and called for any witnesses to come forward with information after 1.5 tonnes of asbestos sheeting were found dumped in the Lliw Valley, according to This Is South Wales.
Specialist teams are now expected to remove the waste from the area in the coming days, with some investigations also set to be carried out into whether there is any evidence regarding who put the rubbish there.
Kim Barrett, a lawyer at Irwin Mitchell who specialises in helping victims who have suffered serious health problems as a result of exposure to asbestos gain justice over the issues, said this issue is now about more than simply flytipping.
The legal expert, who lives in Wales, explained: “The use of proper asbestos removal methods by specialist, trained contractors is a vital part of keeping both those in the construction trade and the general public at large protected from the dangers that exposure to the material can cause.
“The dumping of materials that can pose a clear threat to public health is massively concerning and it is vital that authorities work quickly and thoroughly to ensure that those responsible can be held to account.
“This is undoubtedly another worrying incident where the dangers that asbestos can pose have been significantly underestimated. It cannot be emphasised enough that the right measures need to be taken to ensure that health and safety comes first.”
