Richard Hunter, of Shaw Heath, Stockport in Cheshire, suffered life-changing injuries when he was knocked over by the driver of a Citroen Xsara at a zebra crossing near a busy roundabout at Stockport Train Station on April 2009.
Richard suffered a fractured knee and pelvis, a minor head injury, extensive cuts and bruises to his face, legs and ribs.
He spent four weeks bedridden in hospital with both his legs in splints and more than three years after the accident is still unable to take part in the Iaido martial arts he loved at the Doshinkenyukai Iaido Club in York. He was also unable to help teach new members and youngsters Iaido, a non-competitive form of martial arts.
Specialist road accident lawyers at Irwin Mitchell have now secured a £38,000 settlement for the 33-year-old to pay for his ongoing care, rehabilitation and to cover the loss of earnings he has experienced while he recovers from his injuries.
Kerry Hadley, a road traffic expert at Irwin Mitchell representing Richard, said: “It’s a huge relief for Richard that we are able to support him in getting his life back on track following the accident three years ago.
“We will always fight for our clients who have been a victim of an accident and where their health has been seriously affected. The work we do helps victims to rebuild their lives following serious injury and Richard can now put this incident behind him and look forward to taking part in martial arts competitions again.”
Richard, who works as a shop assistant at a computer game shop in Stockport, said he is relieved the settlement will help him pay for rehabilitation, such as physiotherapy, to help him get his life back on track.
“Before the crash I had a busy and active life working in a shop and seeing friends at my martial arts club.
“But even three years on from the accident I feel life is on hold as I come to terms with the injuries I sustained. It’s been a nightmare really.
“It was really hard when I came out of hospital as I needed constant care from my partner Marie to help me hobble about and do the day to day household jobs that people take for granted. I had time off work and because I wasn’t able to exercise properly or do any martial arts, I was bored and depressed.
“My knee and pelvis still cause me a lot of pain but I hope the funds will help me get back fighting fit as soon as possible.”
