Injured Worker Lifted By Crane From Water Treatment Works
A man injured in an accident at work at a Birmingham building site had to be winched clear from the location in order to get him to an ambulance, it has been revealed.
Reports have outlined the man in his 50s had to be lifted more than 75ft into the air with a paramedic after he suffered back and leg injuries when a cherry picker overturned at the Frankley Water Treatment Works on Monday morning (November 12th).
Another man suffered a head injury in the incident, with both of the workers being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for further treatment.
West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed that the location meant that hoisting the injured man was the only way to get him clear.
Stephen Nye, a Partner and workplace injury specialist at Irwin Mitchell’s Birmingham office, has vast expertise in acting for victims seriously injured in work accidents across the UK.
Commenting on this incident, he said: “While the circumstances of how this injured man was lifted from the site have caught the headlines, the issue of most concern is how the original accident came to occur.
“We hope that a full investigation can be held to determine what happened, with the ultimate aim of ensuring that lessons can be learned and the same problems can be avoided in the future.
“Through our work we have seen how injuries in incidents related to workplace transport can have a significant impact on the lives of workers, often leaving them with long-term injuries which they need significant care and rehabilitation to fully recover from.
“Health and safety should always be a fundamental priority in the workplace.”
