Lawyers Bowled Over By Boccia
School children have enjoyed a Boccia tournament today (Wednesday 29 February) thanks to the Sheffield office of law firm Irwin Mitchell who have teamed up with a local disability sport charity Within Reach, Activity Sheffield and Links SSP to help plan, organise and sponsor the event at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield (EISS).
The Paralympic game Boccia involves players rolling, throwing or kicking a ball towards a jack. If players are unable to throw or kick they can use a ramp to roll the ball from a sitting position making Boccia an accessible and inclusive sport. Children of all ages and abilities from both mainstream and Special Educational Needs schools throughout Sheffield attended today’s tournament.
Within Reach and Activity Sheffield have also been running a weekly Boccia Club at the EISS since November last year, with the help of Irwin Mitchell staff who have joined in the fun alongside participants, parents, carers and siblings.
Karen Codling, Associate Director at Irwin Mitchell, said: “We’re delighted to continue our support of the Sheffield community by getting involved with today’s tournament which has been really well received. It’s wonderful to see people of all abilities taking part and having such a good time.
“I would like to thank Irwin Mitchell staff who’ve helped with the event, and those who have given their time to volunteer at the weekly Boccia sessions. Feedback from participants has been incredible, and we look forward to continuing our support of Boccia that’s really taken off in Sheffield!”
Kimberley Ashmore, Within Reach Development Officer for Disability, said: “Boccia provides the perfect opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to become involved in a sport that’s enjoyed by players all over the world.
“We are extremely grateful for the assistance we receive from firms like Irwin Mitchell which enable us to get more people involved with Boccia and make a real difference to their lives. Our weekly club, The Sheffield Smashers, would not have been a success if it wasn't for the support we have received from Irwin Mitchell. They have all been amazing. ”
