City Council Implements Operation To Tackle Debris From Blaze
Cleaning work has been launched to deal with the possible presence of asbestos in the gutters of properties close to a Glasgow school where a fire broke out in May this year.
Glasgow City Council has informed residents in the G31 postcode area of the city that the cleaning will be undertaken following concerns that the blaze at St Mark’s Primary School had left asbestos debris across the surrounding area.
Tests reportedly revealed that asbestos was found on several roofs during a series of inspections.
Legal experts at Irwin Mitchell’s Glasgow office represent many people who lives have been touched by the legacy of asbestos, such as those who have contracted asbestos-related disease or families who have lost loved ones to mesothelioma.
Elaine Russell, an expert in asbestos claims at Irwin Mitchell, said: “It is obviously a huge concern that asbestos debris has been found in the surrounding area of the school following the fire and all efforts should now be focused on preventing members of the public from coming into contact with it.
“We’ve seen first-hand the terrible consequences that asbestos exposure can have on victims and their families, whether it be people who have come into contact with it through work or in public buildings such as schools and hospitals.
“It is vital that the local authorities work quickly and thoroughly on the clean-up operation, while also then providing further information to residents about the success of the scheme and reassurances that they are no longer at risk.”
