Reports Claim Flu Outbreak Behind Problems

Police in Dundee are continuing to investigate after they were notified of the deaths of seven residents at the Orchard Nursing Home in Broughty Ferry within a few weeks.

It has been confirmed that one 74-year-old man and four women aged between 81 and 91 died at the start of last week at the home.

The funerals of three of the people have been delayed due to the concerns and it has now emerged that two more residents have passed away.

Tayside Police have confirmed they are making inquiries but added that they are at an early stage and will report to the procurator fiscal over the course of the investigation.

It is believed that an outbreak of flu could have potentially been the cause of the deaths, with NHS Tayside sending a team to carry out tests at the site.

Elaine Russell, a Partner at Irwin Mitchell’s Glasgow office, said: “While very few details have yet emerged in relation to these deaths, it is vital that officers work quickly to determine what happened in each case.

“News of this investigation will have raised concerns among both the families of those who have died and relatives of other people staying at the home, so it is vital that they can be provided with answers as soon as possible.”
