Holiday Cut Short Due to Gastroenteritis
Travel law experts at Irwin Mitchell are calling for a tour operator to ensure it has proper procedures in place after a young couple had their holiday at one of the operator’s newest hotels ruined by gastric illness.Gemma Louise Bromley and James Goode, both 23, from Oldham, Lancashire, holidayed at the Grand Faros Hotel in Marmaris, Turkey, in July this summer. The couple have now sought help from travel law experts at Irwin Mitchell to take legal action against tour operator ‘Jewel In The Crown Holidays’ after they had their holiday ruined because Gemma contracted gastroenteritis. Gemma was later admitted to hospital in the UK because of the gastric problems she suffered at the resort.
Gemma fell ill just one week into her two-week holiday. She was seen by a doctor at the resort who diagnosed her with gastroenteritis before placing Gemma on an IV drip and providing her with medication. Due to Gemma’s poor health, the couple travelled home four days early and visited Gemma’s doctor in the UK, following which she was admitted to hospital where it was then found she had a blockage in her bowel.
Gemma said: “The health and safety standards at the hotel were, in my opinion, not good enough. The restaurant was serving hot food which was merely lukewarm, and food was left uncovered with new dishes being added to the food already left out which is something you don’t expect of a four-star resort.
“After I fell ill I was forced to stay in our room, which only made things worse as the air conditioning was broken. I was so worried when I fell ill. You just don’t expect this to happen when you go away on a relaxing break. It was supposed to be our dream holiday, but it was ruined.”
The Grand Faros Hotel has received mixed reviews on the TripAdvisor website, with one user stating that they had “stayed in other hotels in Marmaris and this was the worst by a large margin”, and that “there is no way that this hotel is 4 star standard”.
Elizabeth Tetzner, a travel law expert at Irwin Mitchell, said: “It is concerning to hear that Gemma suffered from serious gastric illness following her holiday in July this year. We would request that the tour operator work with us quickly to resolve this case amicably on behalf of our clients.”
