A group of young first aiders are taking to the countryside for a competition that will push their endurance and team-working skills to the limit.
The St John Ambulance Badgers, who are aged between 5 and 10, will spend the weekend taking part in a lively programme of activities, including drill, first aid, communication, team-work and leadership challenges, as they compete to be named ‘Badger of the Year’.
The competition, supported by Irwin Mitchell Solicitors, takes place at Tytherington Village Hall in Gloucester this weekend. Irwin Mitchell has also provided hoodies to the Youth Leaders who will be supervising the children while they develop outdoor and first aid skills.
On the Sunday, the youngsters will march in the Remembrance Parade through the village of Tytherington, before going to the Tytherington Village Hall for the official presentation of the ‘Badger of the Year’ award.
Jo Darlington of Irwin Mitchell will present the ‘Badger of the Year’ along with three children chosen as ‘Deputy Badger of the Year’, with special trophies and lanyards.
Jo, an expert in serious injury law, said: “The St John Ambulance is a vital service, not only because it provides first aid training and supports the emergency services, but because it inspires young people to learn life skills that could save another person’s life.
“Too many people die in accidents because no one was able to provide first aid when they needed it the most. We are delighted to support the St John Ambulance and help out with the Badger of the Year competition.”
Kathryn Doul, Principal Youth Officer with the St John Ambulance, said: “The Badger of the Year competition aims to give all the Badgers a weekend fun, whilst giving them the skills to potentially make the difference between a life lost and a life saved.
“All of the Badgers will leave the weekend with new found skills, improved first aid ability and raised self esteem and confidence.
“By judging the Badgers on skills such as leadership and team work, we can select children who are confident to teach other Badgers, give presentations and represent us at County events.”
