Irwin Mitchell Organises Special Study Day
Healthcare professionals descended on Dorchester last Friday for a free study day organised by Irwin Mitchell, where the latest developments in care for those suffering from mesothelioma and asbestos-related disease were discussed.
The South West Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer Study Day - held on Friday 20th May at the town’s Kingston Maurward College – was attended by nursing staff and doctors who specialise in helping those who have been touched by the terrible legacy of asbestos.
Experts participated in the event to offer their views on new research and other innovations emerging in the area. Among them was Dr David Baldwin of Nottingham University Hospitals, who gave an overview of lung cancer and mesothelioma epidemiology.
Others who took part included Dorset Cancer Centre’s consultant oncologist Dr Mike Bayne, who talked about advances in the management of the illnesses, and Dr Gerrard Phillips of Dorset County Hospital who discussed local anaesthetic thoracoscopy.
Rosemary Giles, an asbestos specialist at Irwin Mitchell’s London office, led a discussion on legal matters at the one-day event. She said the aim was to raise awareness of the latest work being done in the field.
She explained: “Through our work at Irwin Mitchell we see first-hand the devastating impact that asbestos exposure has on the lives of both victims and their families
“This event has given us the chance to bring together some of the leading minds in this area of medical research and promote a better understanding of what can be done to provide vital support to those who are suffering or have sadly died as a result of asbestos-related illnesses.
“We hope that the event has helped raise awareness of the terrible legacy that asbestos exposure can have and also hopefully point the way to ensuring all healthcare professionals can offer quality advice to cancer patients whose lives have been changed forever by this deadly material.”
