Walsall Care Home To Benefit From New Sensory Garden
A team of solicitors from the Birmingham office of law firm Irwin Mitchell joined forces with a national hearing charity to help raise money for a special sensory garden for deaf and deafblind residents at a Walsall care home.
The team of lawyers joined members of the Royal Institute for the Deaf when they packed shoppers’ bags at Marks and Spencer in New Street, Birmingham and together raised a whopping £727 in aid of the new garden, based in the Caldmore area of Walsall.
RNID is the largest charity in the UK for hearing loss and is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. As part of its centenary celebrations local supporters and members of the Irwin Mitchell team have been invited to attend a birthday party at Buckingham Palace in June, which will be hosted by HRH Prince Philip.
Louise Scott, a solicitor at Irwin Mitchell’s Birmingham Office who organised the fundraising event and has been nominated to receive a regional award for ‘Delivering Results for the RNID’ commented: “Hearing loss and deaf blindness are far more common than people realise so it was great for us to be able to raise money and at the same time help raise public awareness about this life changing disability.
“We all had a great day raising cash for the sensory garden and hope that it will give the residents at the Walsall care home something which will help to improve their quality of life.
“We have a number of other fundraising plans for the garden and a team from Irwin Mitchell will be joining the RNID and the residents to help create the garden later this year.”
Helen Lawrence, RNID’s Service Manager added: “We have been completely overwhelmed by the support shown by the Irwin Mitchell volunteers. The money raised will be used to establish a sensory garden which will make use of different smells, textures and bright colours.
“The garden will give the deaf and deafblind residents a chance to interact with the world around them and appreciate the things that we take for granted everyday.”
