Expert Concerned By Incident

An animal bites specialist at Irwin Mitchell has revealed her concerns following a dog attack which left a seven-year-old boy from Hamilton needing surgery.

Jude Keir suffered facial and eye injuries in the attack by a Staffordshire bull terrier, which happened as he left Woodhead Primary School on Tuesday (March 1st).

He was taken to Wishaw General Hospital and then transferred to Glasgow’s Yorkhill Hospital, while the dog was seized by Strathclyde Police.

A man and two women have been reported to the procurator fiscal over the incident.

Elaine Russell, who specialises in providing advice in relation to dog bite claims at Irwin Mitchell, said: “Dog attacks of this kind can be incredibly traumatic for all involved, particularly when children are seriously hurt in such incidents.

“The number of cases which we advise on, as well as the number which receive media coverage, highlight that this problem is not one which is set to go away anytime soon.

“We have campaigned over the long term for measures that will lead people of all ages to get better protection, including the reintroduction of dog licenses and compulsory insurance. Such moves could go some way to ensure anyone hurt in such a manner will be able to get justice.”
