Two Pedestrians Killed In Incident

A lorry driver from Hereford has been jailed over an incident in which two pedestrians died when his vehicle’s load of timber fell on them.

Graham Morgan, 49, has been imprisoned for 12 months in a hearing at Worcester Crown Court after he admitted two counts of death by dangerous driving in relation to the crash in February, when his lorry hit a bridge.

Tom Matts and Terri-Ann Barnett were walking along the road after taking their son to nursery and were seriously injured when the load fell on them. They both died in hospital later that day.

Commenting on the case, Stephen Nye, a serious injury specialist and Partner at Irwin Mitchell’s Birmingham office, said: “Just days after new figures showed that the number of people killed on our roads is falling, this demonstrates why efforts to promote road safety must continue.

“This case highlights the shocking and devastating injuries that pedestrians can suffer when they are tragically in the wrong place at the wrong time – something we are familiar with through our work representing those who have been seriously injured in road traffic collisions, as well as the families of those who have sadly died.

“It can only be hoped that lessons are learnt from this terrible incident which will go some way to preventing similar incidents in the future.”
