Manufacturer Contacting Customers Over Issue
Product liability experts at Irwin Mitchell are calling for answers after concerns were raised over the safety of a range of fridge-freezers manufacturing by Beko.
The London Fire Brigade has claimed a fire at an apartment block in the capital last week was started as a result of a fault with one of the appliances and Beko has since revealed it is contacting customers over fixing the potential fault.
It is thought that fires can be caused when water gets into the defrost time switch on the products, which in turn leads to an electrical malfunction. There are concerns that up to 500,000 models could be affected by the problem.
Specialists at Irwin Mitchell represent a number of people who have been injured as a result of defective products.
Gary Walker, a solicitor who specialists in product liability claims, said: “Consumers deserve the right to know that the items they buy are fully fit for purpose and, most importantly, safe to use.
“Because of this, it is vital that Beko can provide answers as to why this potentially harmful defect has gone undetected for some time, as well as reassurances that their products will be safe going forward.
“There needs to be a thorough investigation into the safety checks used by the company in order to assess if testing needs to change in order to provide full confirmation that its goods are completely safe.
“We would also urge anyone who has concerns over their appliances to get in touch with the manufacturer as soon as possible.”
