Driver Killed In Motorway Incident
A serious injury expert at Irwin Mitchell has urged authorities to do everything they can to improve safety on the busy M8 motorway, following a major crash in which a lorry driver died and a woman was injured.
Reports have revealed a 68-year-old distribution driver was killed when his vehicle reportedly struck a parapet under a footbridge while travelling eastbound on the route yesterday morning (July 5th).
The 37-year-old woman travelling westbound suffered minor injuries when her car was struck by a metal central reservation which had come away following the initial incident.
Both directions of the road were closed for several hours after the crashes, causing major disruption during rush hour. Police have appealed for witnesses to the crash to come forward.
Elaine Russell, a Partner at Irwin Mitchell’s Glasgow office who specialises in helping those who have suffered serious injuries in road traffic collisions and related incidents, said answers were needed over the incident.
She explained: “This terrible incident once again highlights the dangers on Scotland’s roads occurring just hours after two men were killed and another was seriously injured on the A9.
“We would urge authorities to quickly and thoroughly assess how this latest incident came to occur, in an effort to provide some reassurances that every possible step will be take to avoid something similar happening again.
“Road traffic collisions can have a truly devastating impact on those involved and we have helped many people left with life-changing injuries secure access to funds that will help them through a difficult period of rehabilitation and also long-term care.
“As well as having terrible consequences for those involved, incidents like this also impact on a huge number of other people due to disruption. We hope that lessons can be learnt here which will go some way to emphasising the message of road safety and preventing further terrible incidents in the future.”
