University Of Glasgow Releases New Study
New research which hints at the ongoing risks that may exist after a head injury has highlighted why protective equipment is so important in the workplace, according to an expert at Irwin Mitchell.
A study by the University of Glasgow, published in the journal Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, has suggested that those who have suffered a head injury face an increased risk of death from a variety of causes over the following 13 years.
The research came to the conclusion after comparing around 760 people who have suffered with head injuries with those who had been admitted to hospital for other reasons at the same time.
David Urpeth, national head of workplace injuries at Irwin Mitchell, has called on businesses to take the study as a further indication of the importance of preventing such injuries in the first place.
He explained: “Through my work, I regularly advise victims and the loved ones of those who have suffered serious head injuries following a work accident caused by the negligence or errors of their employers.
“Because of this, I’ve seen first-hand just how devastating and life-changing such injuries can be, often forcing people to leave the world of work completely.
“This research may have raised serious issues, but it is clear that preventing the injuries in the first place – through safer systems of work and the use of the correct protective equipment and guidelines – would be particularly effective way of tackling the problem.
“I urge employers to realise the potential long-term issues they could leave their workers facing if they do not take steps to ensure worker safety and prevent unnecessary accidents at work.”
