Report Critical Of Rotherham Council
A lawyer has called for action to be taken at Rotherham Council after a new report revealed failures in the way the organisation’s children’s services dealt with a serious case.
Gary Walker of Irwin Mitchell was commenting after a Serious Case Review published for Rotherham Safeguarding Children Board revealed that staff failed to protect a four-month-old infant who was later shaken violently by his father.
According to the Review, the danger to the child was not identified, despite staff noting fears that they themselves could be the target of violence. In addition, poor communication between agencies and professionals together with the absence of a core assessment and risk analysis meant that the professionals were unable to fully appreciate the needs of the family and the risk to the children.
Rotherham Council has responded to the publication by admitting that action should have been taken on several occasions.
Discussing the case, Gary Walker, who specialises in cases of child abuse, said: "It is very worrying that we continue to see failures in local authorities across Yorkshire which have led to children being seriously injured and affected for life.
“It seems that lessons are not being learnt and we urge the local authority to take on board the recommendations made in the Review and do their utmost to ensure that those who are most vulnerable are given the most protection."
