Worker Suffered Fatal Head Injuries
The death of a recycling firm employee struck by a 3.7-tonne crane hook has highlighted the potentially grave consequences of failing to address safety in the workplace, an expert at Irwin Mitchell has stated.
John Penhalagan was working for Celsa Manufacturing when he suffered fatal head injuries after being hit by the hook, which was used to transport ladles of molten steel in the company’s melt shop.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive revealed that the hooks were able to move at head height close to workers on the ground without any safeguards being in place.
Celsa Manufacturing was ordered to pay over £230,000 in relation to the incident in 2007.
Accident at work claims lawyer David Urpeth said: “It is deeply concerning that something as straightforward as a risk assessment could have played a key role in preventing this fatal accident.
“Adequate plans need to be in place to address the issue of employee safety in all workplaces, as the potential impact of failing can be truly devastating.
“I hope that this terrible case stands as an example that will encourage all firms which are yet to make suitable safety provisions that the issue simply cannot be ignored.”
