SlingRider baby carriers recalled

The manufacturer Infantino has recalled 4 models of its popular SlingRider baby carrier in the UK, Europe, USA and Canada after fears were raised by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) that use of baby slings was linked to the deaths of 3 children in the USA in 2009. Approximately 10,000 of the SlingRider models have been sold in the UK. Infantino has also recalled a similar product, the Wendy Bellissimo in the USA and Canada.

The following Infantino models have been recalled in the UK:

SlingRider - Model 551-710
SlingRider - Model 551-734
SlingRider - Model 151-321
SlingRider - Model 151-322

The products have been recalled as they pose a risk of suffocation to children under four months old. Also potentially at risk are children born prematurely, children with a low birth weight and children with breathing problems.

The slings pose a risk as the soft fabric which they are made from can press against the face of the child and cause suffocation. Concerns have also been raised that a baby’s head may also be forced forwards whilst they are in a sling causing restriction of their airways, thereby increasing the chances of suffocation.

The CPSC was critical of this type of baby carrier and stated that it had investigated at least a further 14 deaths in the last 20 years associated with baby slings. This criticism was not aimed solely at Infantino.
