Two Killed At Industrial Estate
The deaths of two workers at a chipboard factory in Kirby, Merseyside, must be investigated swiftly, a workplace injury expert at Irwin Mitchell has demanded.
Reports have revealed that two men died at the Sonae factory on Knowsley Industrial Estate, with the emergency services being called to the site at around 3:45pm yesterday afternoon (December 7th).
Although only a few details have so far been released, the Liverpool Echo has suggested the two men – thought to be in their 20s – were injured after being caught up in machinery.
A joint investigation into the incident has been launched by Merseyside Police and the Health and Safety Executive.
David Urpeth, head of workplace injuries at Irwin Mitchell, called on the authorities to work quickly to discover what led to the tragedy.
He said: “While details on the incident are only sketchy at this moment in time, it is clear that questions need to be answered as to what happened in the run-up to this fatal accident.
“It is also vital that investigations focus on whether any failings in relation to safety procedures and processes may have contributed to this tragic incident.
“Both the families of those killed in this incident and fellow workers at the site will be seeking answers as to how this happened, as well as reassurances that measures can be put in place to prevent anything similar happening again.”
