Lawyer Calls For Investigation

An asbestos-related claims specialist at Irwin Mitchell has called for an investigation to be carried out in relation to the presence of the deadly material at an incinerator plant in Derbyshire.

According to reports, the families of workers who were employed at the Raynesway site in Derby are thought to be considering legal action against Derbyshire County Council after witnesses suggested there were few controls over what was burned.

The Derby Evening Telegraph reports that the plant was originally not thought to contain asbestos, although it was later revealed that furnaces were lagged with the material. At least three personal injury claims related to exposure at the plant are already believed to be in progress.

Commenting on the case, Adrian Budgen, a Partner at Irwin Mitchell’s Sheffield office, said: “Exposure to even a small amount of asbestos can have dramatic impact on the life of workers and so many of the cases I deal with have shown the fatal consequences of the material.

“I hope that the County Council in this case is able to fully investigate the presence of asbestos at this site and explain why more safeguards were not used to protect the health and wellbeing of employees.

“While claims may not spare families the pain of losing a loved one, they often go some way to raising awareness of the dangers of asbestos and ensuring employers.”
