Mesothelioma
Three intrepid asbestos campaigners are in the saddle and have taken to the road to highlight the dangers of a 'hidden killer'.
Specialist asbestos solicitors Katrina London from Irwin Mitchell, Paul Glanville from John Pickering & Partners and campaigner Jason Addy are part way through a gruelling 1,200-mile bike ride from Glasgow to Southampton in a bid to raise awareness of the plight of asbestos-related cancer sufferers and to support the call for a national research centre.
The trio, who started from Glasgow on 20th June and are due to finish in Southampton on 4th July, are cycling through regions of the country whose communities have been most blighted by the asbestos-related cancer mesothelioma.
The intrepid cyclists are due to reach Birmingham on 30th June and the following day (Wednesday 1st July) will join protests at the Canadian Consulate in central Birmingham as they call for Canada to stop mining and exporting asbestos.
They also hope to meet the MPs who have been doing invaluable work around asbestos issues in Parliament outside the Houses of Parliament on 2nd July.
Rider, Katrina London commented: "Its tough going as we are cycling up to 100 miles a day, but it is for a very important cause and is truly a breathtaking journey to raise awareness of the legacy caused by asbestos."
"It is a staggering fact that asbestos-related cancers remain one of Britain’s biggest workplace killers in 2009, yet there is practically no dedicated research funding into these cancers."
"The main aim is to show the terrible impact asbestos has upon the victims of mesothelioma, to raise funds for research into asbestos-related cancers and show our support for the campaign to set up a national centre for asbestos-related diseases (NCARD)."
