Severe spinal injuries
A Rotherham family are appealing for witnesses after a collision on the M18 motorway left a man with severe spinal injuries.
Mick Sanders 49 of Moorgate, Rotherham, has been in the Spinal Injuries Unit at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield since Saturday 23 August 2008 when the motorbike he was riding collided with a car on the M18 motorway at approximately 3pm.
He suffered severe spinal cord injuries leaving him with paralysis in all four limbs. He also sustained a fracture to his left arm.
The incident occurred in the nearside (slow lane) of the motorway near to Junction 2. The Police have confirmed that the traffic was slow moving due to another collision further up the M18 and that the paramedics were virtually "on hand" to treat Mick.
Caroline Jepson, from Irwin Mitchell Solicitors, representing Mick, said: "There is very little information available in relation to what exactly happened, however the Police report states that Mick hit the back of a Toyota Avensis which was travelling in front of him, after another vehicle had swerved onto the carriageway."
Mick was riding a "Buell Lightning" motorbike which was a courtesy bike loaned to him by Harley Davidson in Doncaster.
His family are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the collision to contact Neil Whiteley or Caroline Jepson at Irwin Mitchell on 0114 274 4380 or via e-mail on caroline.jepson@irwinmitchell.com.
