Elderly nursing home claim

Four people have appeared before Gloucester magistrates charged with ill-treatment and neglect after an investigation into a nursing home. The charges relate to Newsham House in Gloucester from 2003 to 2005. Jeremy Davies of Chippenham; Lorraine Jackson, of Wakefield; Heather Bolton and Derek Youds, both from Gloucester, appeared in court on Tuesday 25th September .

They are charged with offences under the Mental Health Act and were bailed to reappear on 27 November. The offences are alleged to have involved 10 residents at the complex on Stroud Road. Mr Youds, 65, and Ms Bolton, 56, who were employees at the home, are charged with neglect and ill-treatment. Ms Jackson, 49, and Mr Davies, 60, are still with parent company ADL plc and face 10 and 11 charges respectively.

Newsham House provides 41 beds for the elderly who suffer from dementia and mental disorders. The arrests followed a tip-off to the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI).

A CSCI spokesman said: "CSCI and CACD (Community and Adult Care Directorate) will have discussions with ADL Plc about the implications of the charges and then consider what action, if any, needs to be taken. "The welfare of the residents is our top priority, and we are keeping them and their relatives informed of the situation."
