Asbestos related cancer death
The family of a Gateshead man who has died from an asbestos-related cancer has launched an urgent appeal for help in their battle to win compensation.
They would like anybody who knew or worked with Edwin Johnson - popularly known as Eddie - to come forward to assist with the claim.
They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who might be able to confirm that Eddie worked for a Newcastle company called R W Bell and Co in Jesmond.
There, he was exposed to deadly asbestos dust on various sites that he worked on as a joiner.
59-year-old Eddie Johnson died in September last year and an inquest earlier this month confirmed he died from a cancer probably caused by exposure to asbestos.
While working for the company he had to cut up asbestolux sheets for use as fire protection in science laboratories at schools being built in Gosforth and Blyth.
He also worked alongside teams of laggers using asbestos on site to insulate the school boilers and pipework.
Eddie Johnson worked at RW Bell for about six years before leaving the firm in 1967.
He became very poorly in September 2004, complaining of severe chest pains and breathing difficulties. His condition deteriorated and he died in September 2005.
Asbestos related cancer solicitors
Solicitor Helen Ashton at the Newcastle office of national personal injury lawyers Irwin Mitchell is acting for the family and a potential claim is being prepared against Mr Johnson's former employers.
She said: "I'm appealing for witnesses to come forward to confirm how Mr Johnson was exposed to asbestos during his time at RW Bell & Co.
"There is strong evidence to suggest that asbestos exposure contributed to him getting the cancer from which he died.
"I am appealing for anybody who remembers Eddie or worked for RW Bell during the 1960s to come forward.
"Their information could prove vital in helping secure justice."
