Paraiso Del Sol Hotel, Dominican Republic
A Caribbean dream destination has turned into a holiday from hell for around 100 British holidaymakers. Guests who stayed at the Paraiso Del Sol in Cabarate in the Dominican Republic, between December 2004 and February 2005, were struck down with stomach complaints and symptoms of sickness & diarrhoea, with at least one guest being admitted to intensive care in resort.
Many guests fell ill within a few days of arrival and were transferred from the Paraiso Del Sol to other hotels on the Island. Guests complained of cockroaches in the restaurant and food that was poorly cooked and lukewarm.
Mr Andrew Richardson aged 35, from County Durham, suffered from severe diarrhoea and vomiting. He was admitted to hospital for five days whilst his wife, Alison, aged 40, and 6-year-old son, who were also taken ill, were left to fend for themselves.
Mr Richardson said: "This holiday was booked as a 40th birthday present for my wife and as a relaxing two-week break to recharge our batteries. Instead this turned into the holiday from hell for my entire family. The local representative gave my wife no help during this difficult time. Everybody we spoke to in the hotel seemed to have been affected or knew of someone who was ill."
The holidaymakers travelled to the Dominican Republic with Airtours and claims for compensation are being investigated by Irwin Mitchell Solicitors in Birmingham.
Solicitor representing victims of Paraiso Del Sol Hotel illness
Suki Chhokar, partner with Irwin Mitchell, specialises in legal cases involving overseas accidents and illness. He says: "We have been contacted by several holidaymakers in relation to their holidays at the Paraiso del Sol and we are expecting enquires from others as it seems there has been a wide spread problem at the hotel since February this year. We are also acting for clients who went to the hotel in August last year with another major tour operator, Odyssey Worldwide, who were also ill during their holiday.
"Every year we act for people who have been on holiday and who have suffered illness. Often these illnesses can have a long term and serious impact on health. Sadly, we have seen a recent increase in the number of cases arising out of holidays in the Dominican Republic."
