Irwin Mitchell's specialist Serious Injury team has helped a man claim compensation after he was involved in a serious road traffic collision.
Background
In spring 2011, our client Tim had been out for the evening for a friend’s birthday celebrations. When the evening came to an end, Tim and his friends were heading home in a taxi. The taxi was only a few minutes away from their home when it was involved in a high speed, head on collision with another vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle involved in the accident had a blood alcohol level in excess of three times the legal limit and was travelling at an estimated 70 mph in a 30 mph zone.
Tragically, two people involved in the accident were killed, and others were seriously injured. Tim sustained severe multiple injuries, including a fracture to his lower spine, five broken ribs, a fracture to his right leg and multiple ruptures in several internal organs. He also developed radial nerve pals, a serious condition in his hand as a result of a fracture to his upper arm.
Tim was admitted to the trauma unit at Kings College Hospital and after four weeks in hospital, he embarked on an extensive recovery lasting over 18 months. This involved two further operations and ongoing treatment at the London Hand Clinic, the Outpatients Department at Kings College hospital, and a private physiotherapy clinic.
How Irwin Mitchell helped
Irwin Mitchell’s team of highly experienced personal injury lawyers were able to secure £25,000 in provisional payments, which initially enabled Tim to access a wide range of rehabilitation services. These included an extensive physiotherapy program for his spinal injury, privately funded hand therapy and psychological counselling to help overcome the effects of the accident and to help in the grieving process.
Tim was also able to obtain ongoing private medical support from his hospital consultants, allowing rapid response to all his concerns and requirements. His two last surgeries were done on a private basis and were scheduled quickly and efficiently.
Following a two year legal conflict, Tim’s claim has now been settled for £125,000. He has made a fantastic recovery and is now back at work, secure in the knowledge that any future therapy needed to deal with the long term impact of his injuries is available.
