John Flathers



John heads up the Real Estate team in our Leeds office. He has considerable experience in all real estate transactions, but has a particular focus on development work, property finance and corporate occupiers.

He also acts on investment transactions, for insolvency practitioners on property related matters, and for strategic land acquirers. 

John has recently become a member of the CBI Regional Council for Yorkshire and the Humber (2018 – 2021).

Recent highlights:

  • The redevelopment of over one million sq ft of mixed use space at Clarence Dock Leeds on behalf of the Trustees of the Royal Armouries.
  • The successful public procurement bid and redevelopment of Trafford Town Hall, Trafford for Shepherd Developments.
  • Working on a Joint Venture with Huddersfield and Calderdale NHS Trust on the formation of the Pennine Property Partnership and the continuing development of two significant sites in Huddersfield.
  • Advising on numerous development and investment loans for Santander.
  • Several corporate occupiers on their property portfolios including two relocations to London HQs and the property portfolio of a leading international property agency.
  • Strategic land options and planning promotion agreements over many sites acting for both landowners and landbuyers.

    Brexit Stockpiling Driving Demand For Industrial Property

    “There is a great deal of uncertainty for business caused by Brexit and I think it is inevitable that they will attempt to manage the process as best they can. One way that they will do this is by stockpiling vital equipment for their businesses. “Many of the businesses that are looking at doing this, or already doing it, are not only manufacturers that are worried about a ‘no deal Brexit’ and rely on just in time delivery, they are also companies such as logistics firms that need parts that are currently produced overseas to maintain their fleet of vehicles.For food suppliers clearly this is less of an issue in relation to perishable goods but still important where they rely upon automation and for example,keeping their conveyor systems moving. “Property wise, this might mean short term leases of industrial and warehousing space. This can provide a challenge for some because the availability is not always in the best location and there is a real possibility that a shortage of supply could force prices up.”
