Jemma Cahan

I am a solicitor specialising in medical negligence claims on behalf of patients and their families.

I deal with a variety of cases ranging from delays in diagnosis of cancer, including breast cancer, lung cancer and cervical cancer, to delays in referrals by GPs or other medical professionals, failures by doctors to correctly diagnose medical conditions leading to complications and sometimes death, incorrect reporting of CT scans or MRI scans or other tests and investigations leading to delays in diagnosis or incorrect treatment. I also deal with cases where patients have sadly died because of negligent medical treatment.

My job is to investigate my clients’ cases and to negotiate settlements where they are entitled to compensation. I understand that the medical negligence process can be very daunting for people, so I make sure that my clients understand each step of the process as I deal with their claim.

What Inspired You To Get Into Law?

I became a clinical negligence solicitor because I wanted to help people who have suffered an injury or the loss of a member of their family and who need help dealing with what can sometimes be a very daunting legal process.

What Is The Most Rewarding Aspect Of Your Role?

The most rewarding part of my work is helping people to investigate their concerns and to understand what has happened to them or a member of their family and to help them to be able to move on with their lives. Being able to claim compensation means that my clients don't need to worry about financial problems anymore and I can assist to make sure they have money to adapt their home if necessary or to pay for carers or equipment or medical treatment they might need as a result of their injury.

What Do You Like About Working At Irwin Mitchell?

At Irwin Mitchell, we not only help our clients pursue their medical negligence claims, we are also determined to help our clients recover from their injuries and to be able to move on with their lives. Working at Irwin Mitchell means that we do whatever we can to assist with the rehabilitation process and to help our clients put in place changes such as home adaptations or purchasing equipment to make their lives easier.

What Do You Do Away From The Office?

When I'm away from the office, I enjoy spending time with my husband and three children and our cheeky Norfolk terrier.
