Jemma Cahan

Solicitor

Biography

I am a solicitor in the medical negligence department in London and I joined Irwin Mitchell in 2008.

I'm accredited as a Litigator by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) and I’m a member of AVMA (Action against Medical Accidents).

I deal with a variety of cases, such as:

  • Delayed cancer diagnoses (including breast cancer, lung cancer and cervical cancer)
  • Delayed referrals by GPs or other medical professionals
  • Misdiagnoses leading to medical complications or death
  • Incorrect reporting of tests, scans and investigations leading to delayed diagnosis or incorrect treatment
  • Fatal medical negligence.

My job is to investigate my clients’ cases and to negotiate settlements where they are entitled to compensation. I understand that the medical negligence process can be very daunting for people, so I make sure that my clients understand each step of the process as I deal with their claim.

What Inspired You To Get Into Law?

I became a solicitor because I was intrigued by the law. I wanted to understand it and use my knowledge to help those who need help dealing with what can sometimes be a very daunting legal process.

What Is The Most Rewarding Aspect Of Your Role?

The most rewarding part of my work is helping people to investigate their concerns, understand what has happened to them or a family member, and move on with their lives.

Claiming compensation means that my clients don't need to worry about financial problems anymore. I can make sure they have money to pay for any home adaptations, equipment, care, or medical treatment they might need as a result of their injury.

What Do You Like About Working At Irwin Mitchell?

At Irwin Mitchell, we not only help our clients pursue their medical negligence claims, we are also determined to help our clients recover from their injuries and move on with their lives. Working at Irwin Mitchell means that we do whatever we can to assist with the rehabilitation process and to help our clients make changes such as home adaptations or purchasing equipment to make their lives easier.

What Do You Do Away From The Office?

When I'm away from the office, I enjoy spending time with my husband and three young children, going for long walks, camping and enjoying holidays together.
