I am a solicitor in the Medical Negligence team in Birmingham.
I act for claimants in clinical negligence cases against NHS Trusts, private practitioners and general practitioners (GPs). I have a varied case load, which includes
It would be too difficult to say there was a single most rewarding aspect of my role. I get great job satisfaction in finding answers for my clients and also in helping to make real improvements in their lives.
Often my clients explain to me that they feel as though they have been kept in the dark and that nobody has listened to them. I fully investigate the standard of care my clients receive in order to find answers for them.
It is also very rewarding to help clients rebuild their lives after they, or a loved one, has sustained life changing injuries. For example, I have worked with a client to establish a care and rehabilitation package for his wife, after she sustained life changing brain injuries. After assisting in securing a lump sum payment of nearly £10m, it was extremely rewarding to see the improvement this made to their lives.
I am very fortunate to work with a very talented, driven and committed team. The team at Irwin Mitchell understands the concerns that people face at each stage of a claim and are committed to achieving the best possible outcomes for our clients.
Fitness is my passion! I am a qualified gym instructor and I like to get to the gym as often as possible. I also enjoy spending time with family and friends and getting in the kitchen when I get the chance.
"We cannot recommend Ashley Cocker and Irwin Mitchell enough for their professionalism, decency, discretion and empathy. Our family, especially my grandfather, suffered a terrible ordeal but I am truly thankful for the support, advice and guidance we got from Ashley and the team at Irwin Mitchell. Your work will never be forgotten." – Louise Mary Wood
"I'm so glad we chose Irwin Mitchell to help us - from the very start we were treated with the utmost respect. Ashley Cocker was very understanding and sympathetic. If there was anything that I didn't understand he explained it, such as the medical terminology. When we went to meet Ashley at Birmingham we were made to feel very welcome: I suffer from anxiety, but I felt at ease in his presence. It was a very hard experience to go through but worth it, if only to get justice for my beautiful sister Yvette. I would (and have) recommend Irwin Mitchell to anyone who needs answers and closure to anything they have been through. Thank you Ashley Cocker and everyone who helped us fight our case." - Colette Webb
“I must express my wholehearted thanks to you…in achieving such a satisfactory result…Yet again, many many thanks for all your efforts.”
“On behalf of the family, I’d like to thank you for your help and guidance in taking us through the claim process, and also your endless patience and understanding in your dealings with my mother, in setting her mind at rest regarding the many issues she raised. Thank you.”
This is an incredibly worrying case where our client was left in agony, and suffered following negligent surgery performed on 26 April 2014, where our client’s ACL graft was not positioned correctly. Were it not for the substandard surgery, our client would have made a full recovery sooner and he would have avoided the need for two-stage revision surgery.
“It is clear in this case that standards of care fell below the required standard and it is vital that such issues are simply never repeated again.
“While nothing can change what has happened, we hope that this settlement will go some way to allowing our client to move forward with his life and put the issues he has faced behind him.”
Anyone undergoing surgery expects that they will get the best possible standard of care, so the circumstances of this case are very worrying.
“While we are pleased to have helped our client achieve a settlement, it is absolutely vital that everything possible is done to learn lessons from what happened to him.
“Patient safety should always be the absolute priority for the NHS, yet this type of incident only serves to undermine the trust and confidence of patients. This cannot be allowed to happen again.
"In addition to the substandard care my client received, it is also disappointing that NHS Resolution delayed the settlement of this claim. In the interests of reaching a swift settlement, my client made an early offer to settle in October 2016, however, this was not accepted until September 2017. As a result, following almost a year of needless litigation, avoidable legal costs were incurred."
