Event Is Being Hosted By Law Firm Irwin Mitchell, Mesothelioma Support Yorkshire And St Leonard’s Hospice
A free event to provide support and information for those that have been diagnosed with the asbestos-related cancer is taking place on 17th October.
National law firm Irwin Mitchell have teamed up with Mesothelioma Support Yorkshire and St Leonards Hospice to put on the Cancer Patient Information Event at The Principal York.
Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer of the lining of the lungs, commonly associated with exposure to asbestos. Due to the level of exposure, it can take decades for symptoms to show.
The event, which will take place from 10am to 1.30pm, will provide individuals diagnosed with the work related cancer mesothelioma, and their families, an opportunity to come together in an informal roundtable style, and discuss care and support options available to them, and get advice from national charity Mesothelioma UK.
Asbestos-related disease specialists at Irwin Mitchell will also be present, as well as representatives from the local St Leonards Hospice. The hospice presently provides specialist medical and nursing care for people with life threatening illnesses, predominantly cancer, along with support for their families.
Ian Toft, who heads the asbestos-related disease team at Irwin Mitchell’s Leeds office, said:
Expert Opinion
“Over 2,500 people are dying from mesothelioma every year in the UK due to the negligence of their employer’s decades ago.
“The vast majority of the people we represent were never warned of the dangers posed by asbestos and sadly were never given any protective equipment that would have reduced their exposure to the deadly substance.
“Individuals suffering from cancer frequently require care, support and information urgently and we are hosting this day to provide them with an opportunity to be armed with the knowledge that they will require prior to the progression of their disease.” Ian Toft - Partner
The law firm recently announced as part of Hospice Care Week that it had managed to recover over £300,000 for hospices around Yorkshire. This includes just over £34,500 for St Leonards Hospice.
Simon Bolton, Mesothelioma UK Nurse Specialist and facilitator of the regional mesothelioma support group (MESSY) said: “The Patient Information event provides a unique opportunity for people affected by mesothelioma to meet and speak with clinicians and solicitors in a relaxed and informal setting.”
If you are interested in attending the event at The Principal York, Station Road, then please contact Ian Toft on 0113 218 6453 or email Ian.Toft@IrwinMitchell.com. A lunch will be provided at the event.
