Adrian Wright Discussed Living With Brain Injury And Rehabilitation
A Rugby man who trekked the Inca trail as part of his recovery from a traumatic brain injury suffered in a car accident has spoken out about the power of physical activity in helping people with serious injuries get their lives back on track.
Adrian Wright was left with memory loss, anxiety issues and difficulties with organising tasks after his accident in 2006. He also suffered serious physical injuries to his skull and leg which left him in a coma immediately after the crash.
Specialist serious injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell represented Adrian and were able to secure him a settlement, which is now managed by the firm’s Court of Protection team in Birmingham who ensure the funds enable him to access the rehabilitation he needs.
Adrian trekked the Inca trail last year and appeared at a special event at Irwin Mitchell’s Birmingham office together with his support worker, Ben O’Malley, to talk about how important physical activity has been in his rehabilitation and helping him deal with the issues caused by his brain injury.
They were joined by Marie Collis who has started working with Ben to move forwards the Monkey-Box concept and to incorporate a more holistic approach to rehabilitation through emphasis on nutritional adjustments.
Adrian and Ben discussed the principles behind Monkey-Box, the model that has helped Adrian to overcome a number of obstacles he faced following his accident, with members of the serious injury and court of protection teams at the law firm’s Temple Street office.
Monkey-Box is a functional fitness inspired support plan that empowers people to experience the benefit of a community focused network of coaches and specialists across the UK.
Adrian and Ben now travel around the country introducing other people to the Monkey-Box model and have worked with a number of other people who have suffered serious brain injuries.
Joanna Grewer, an Associate Solicitor in the Court of Protection team at Irwin Mitchell’s Birmingham office, who assists Adrian, said:
Adrian said: “It was great to be able to go back to the Irwin Mitchell offices to discuss my progress since the accident and the work Ben and I do to help people who are dealing with the same issues I am.
“Creating Monkey-Box with Ben has given me a new challenge to replace the work environment I lost due to my accident. I feel now that I have a purpose. I don’t know what I would be doing now without Monkey-Box and it’s great to be able to help people who deal with individuals who have a range of complex needs due to injuries understand the challenges we can face in day-to-day life and the range of different activities that can help recovery.”
