Expert Calls For Answers From HSE Investigation

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is investigating after a worker in Renfrewshire died after suffering serious head injuries in a work accident in an abattoir.

Alexander McCrae died in Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley following the incident at Sandyford Abattoir, where it is believed he was hit by the carcass of a cow.

A spokesman for the site has revealed it is working closely with authorities to discover what happened in the incident, while police have confirmed a report on the investigation will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Elaine Russell, a Partner at Irwin Mitchell’s Glasgow office who specialises in workplace injury cases, said answers were desperately needed into the incident.

She explained: “Only a handful of facts have been revealed regarding this terrible fatal incident and it is vital that police, the HSE and other authorities work quickly to provide a clear picture of what happened.

“It is particularly important that the investigation seeks to provide reassurances over the health and safety standards at the abattoir, as the death undoubtedly raises concerns in this area.

“Ultimately, we hope that staff and authorities are able to work quickly and thoroughly to ensure any lessons can be learned from this incident and the same terrible incident will not be repeated in the future.”
