Government To Release Road Safety Information

New plans which will see speed camera data released to the public have been welcomed by a serious injury lawyer at Irwin Mitchell.

Road safety minister Mike Penning has revealed that the information could highlight accident rates at specific sites using cameras, as well as the speeds of vehicles and the number of those prosecuted after being caught by the devices.

It is hoped that the move will raise awareness about both the effectiveness of the cameras, as well as the importance of road safety and the reduction in crashes.

Jane Horton, who specialises in neurotrauma and serious injury claims at Irwin Mitchell’s Leeds office, said: “It has to be remembered that the use of speed cameras should always be about improving safety not revenue.

“However, any steps that are taken to highlight dangerous blackspots and, in turn, encourage more appropriate driving within those areas must be welcomed.

“We deal with a number of serious injury claims related to road crashes and the impact that such incidents have on both victims and their families can be completely devastating.

“Speed cameras can play a vital role in ensuring that the number of people who suffer the anguish caused by traffic incidents will fall in the future.”
