Stephen Nye from law firm Irwin Mitchell said: "This terrible tragedy is sadly all too common on our roads, with young children being killed and seriously injured every day. Car drivers should be aware that children are particularly vulnerable and do not fully appreciate the dangers of the road. Drivers need to take extra caution when they see children next to the road, or they are in areas where children are likely to be, for example close to schools or playgrounds.

"Having dealt with many cases in which children have been seriously injured, it is very often the case that a driver reducing his or her speed can make a huge difference to the severity of injury and the child's chances of survival."
