Appeal For Former Colleagues To Come Forward With Information
The family of a former furnace fitter from Birmingham who died of asbestos-related disease have launched an appeal asking for his old workmates to come forward and help them gain justice regarding his death.
Brian Davis died aged 88 in January 2017, just three months after he was diagnosed with asbestosis – a serious lung condition caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos.
Following his death, his family instructed specialist asbestos-related disease lawyers at Irwin Mitchell’s Birmingham office to investigate how he developed the illness and discover whether more could have been done to prevent it from occurring.
Now, as part of their work, the legal experts are seeking information from anyone who either worked with Brian during his time as a furnace fitter for Metalectric Furnaces Ltd in the 1950s or could shed light on the presence of asbestos during the role.
Expert Opinion
“Our clients remain devastated by their loss and are understandably desperate for answers regarding how Brian was exposed to asbestos.
“We have been working to develop a full picture of his work history and would be keen for further information regarding use of asbestos at Metalectric Furnaces Ltd. We would be hugely grateful to anyone who may be able to come forward and help us in this regard.” Iain Shoolbred - Senior Associate Solicitor
Prior to his death, Brian’s loved ones talked to him regarding how he may have come into contact with asbestos.
His grandson Ryan recalled: “Grandad’s diagnosis did lead him to reflect on when he may have been exposed and he specifically talked about using it during his time as a furnace fitter during his employment at Metalectric Furnaces Ltd.
“He told me how it came to him in large blocks and he would have to break it apart to fit it around the outside of the furnace. He added that the dust would go everywhere and he could often see it floating around in the air.
“It was very hard to see the impact that asbestosis had on Grandad and to lose him just three months after his diagnosis was awful. The entire family just feels that we deserve justice regarding his death and we would appreciate any help that anyone may be able to provide.”
