A Record 122 Car Recalls Were Issued In The First Quarter Of 2017
Specialist product liability lawyers at Irwin Mitchell respond to new data reported today showing a significant increase in car recalls, 80% of which were triggered after customers complained of injury.
2017 has seen a sharp increase in the number of models recalled, with faulty airbags accounting for over 40% of the total 122 recalls in the first quarter of the year. This marks an increase from the 90 models that were recalled in the last quarter of 2016.
Tim Annett, a Partner at Irwin Mitchell in the law firm’s product liability team, said:
Expert Opinion
“The news that car recalls have risen to a record high is worrying, especially as so many were only triggered after injuries were reported. Cars are important for many people, but road safety is vital for everyone. Ensuring cars are safe to use before they allowed onto the roads should be of paramount importance.
“Decisions to recall products, particularly cars, are not taken lightly and anyone who owns a recalled should return it as soon as possible. This data raises questions about whether manufacturers should be more proactive, especially given the recent criticism of Vauxhall by the Transport Select Committee.
“We’ve seen first-hand the devastating injuries that can be caused by defective products and it can be life-changing for families. This is an important issue that cannot be overlooked.” Tim Annett - Partner
The law applying to defective products is complicated, and can sometimes leave those affected with no clear right of redress. In response to this, Irwin Mitchell has launched its Safety As Standard campaign to highlight how the current legal system does not do enough to protect consumers.
As the UK’s largest personal injury firm, the firm is fighting for reform of existing product liability law; working with charities, consumer agencies and retailers to help raise standards; and campaigning to educate its clients and the general public about the risks of defective products and the consumer rights available to those affected by them.
