Eight Survivors Settled Legal Claims Against Former PE Teacher Marcus Marcussen
Eight survivors of abuse by midlands teacher Mr Marcus Marcussen have now settled their legal cases as they seek to put their ordeal behind them with appropriate therapies and support.
Specialist abuse lawyers at firm Irwin Mitchell’s Birmingham office are representing a group of former pupils of Mr Marcus Marcussen who were abused by the PE teacher between the 1950s and 1980s. Eight of the survivors have now received settlement from Birmingham City Council with the others also progressing their legal claims.
The charity Rape & Sexual Violence Project (RSVP) will be assisting Irwin Mitchell in holding a drop in clinic to provide advice to survivors on 18th November at Irwin Mitchell’s Temple Street office. RSVP offers many services to survivors of sexual violence, which includes advocacy and specialist counselling. A representative from RSVP will be available to offer support from 12-2pm.
Now in his 90s, Marcus Marcussen was sentenced to nine years in prison in February 2015 after being found guilty of 25 counts of indecent assault.
During the hearing it was alleged the abuse happened during Mr Marcussen’s time working at Illmington Road Comprehensive School in Weoley Castle between 1957 and 1978, as well as during swimming sessions held at the Square Club.
Expert Opinion
“We’ve heard first-hand the ordeal that many survivors of abuse by Mr Marcussen have been through. Thankfully we are able to help them to receive the help and support they need to overcome the impact the trauma has had on their lives.
“What other survivors may not be aware of is that there are legal time limits in place which could prevent them from receiving the same help and support unless they begin their cases soon. That’s why we are holding a drop in clinic for people to come in and talk to us, or to call in and receive advice on whether or not they can bring a claim.” Raman Dhillon - Solicitor
Anyone who is affected by these issues and would like to speak to a specialist abuse lawyer is invited to a drop in clinic at Irwin Mitchell’s Birmingham office on Temple Street on 18 November between 9am and 5pm. Alternatively if survivors would prefer to phone in to remain their anonymity they can call Raman Dhillon on 0121 203 5317.
