The organisation revealed there were 27 fatal or serious crashes on the road between 2010 and 2012, with 40 per cent of those incident involving vehicles running off the road, while 19 per cent of the incidents were head-on collisions.
Local residents have frequently called for improvements to be made to the road, particularly as it is also very popular with tourists.
Sarah Llewelyn Rees, an expert serious injury lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, who is from Aberystwyth originally and who regularly uses the road herself, said: “This is the only trunk road from the Midlands to West Wales and it is beautiful, winding its way through the mountains but it can get extremely busy with tourists and heavy goods vehicles. It is also a very popular route for motorcyclists.
“It is vital this road, which is known as an accident blackspot, is improved and steps are taken to improve its safety record.
“In our work we have seen first-hand the impact collisions can have on those involved, as well as their family and friends. We hope that this report will encourage further action on road safety in relation to the A44 and that measures can be implemented to reduce the number of serious accidents on the route.
“Simple measures such as guard rails could prevent run-off accidents and the serious injuries motorists can suffer when they leave the road. It is also important that road users on the A44 remain vigilant while using the road and think about ways they can improve road safety, particularly as Brake’s Road Safety Week is currently ongoing.”
