Experts Contacted For Help In Relation To Problems
By Rob Dixon
Legal experts have launched an investigation into concerns over breast cancer services at King’s Mill Hospital at Mansfield between 2004 and 2010, after being contacted for help by people affected by problems related to tests.
In October last year, the Care Quality Commission launched an urgent investigation into breast cancer screening services at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, after the hospital confirmed it was recalling 79 women regarding test results relating to breast tissue biopsies.
The announcement came at the same time as independent regulator Monitor confirmed it was taking regulatory action to ensure strong leadership was in place at the Trust, after it was also found to be in breach of its terms of authorisation in September 2012.
Irwin Mitchell’s specialist medical negligence lawyers have now been instructed to provide legal support to people affected by alleged problems in screening and mistreatment related to breast cancer at the hospital.
David Body, Partner and Sheffield-based head of the Medical Law and Patients’ Rights team, said: “The concerns raised in October regarding King’s Mill Hospital were clearly a major concern and we have now been contacted in relation to some of the problems identified.
“We are very worried by the scale of the concerns and will be thoroughly investigating the issues which we have been notified about, in an effort to gain answers over the problems that patients have faced.
“Patient safety must always be a fundamental priority and it will be important to ensure that lessons can be learned that will prevent similar alleged issues in testing from emerging in the future.
“At this stage, we would also be keen for more information related to the experiences that patients have had at the hospital and would urge anyone with further detail to come forward.”
