Scottish Government Launches New Initiative In Road Safety Week
Serious injury lawyers in Scotland who specialise in helping people injured in road accidents to access vital rehabilitation and support have welcomed the launch of a new campaign to raise awareness of safety on country roads.
Coinciding with Road Safety Week, the Scottish Government and Road Safety Scotland are urging motorists to remain vigilant and be aware of how the smallest distractions and driving at an inappropriate speed can cause accidents on rural routes, particularly in ‘rush hour’ periods between 3pm and 6pm.
Transport minister Keith Brown said that the campaign had been influenced by statistics which revealed that around 70 per cent of road fatalities in Scotland occur on country roads.
As part of the campaign, adverts will be broadcast on TV and radio to raise awareness of the issues and ensure drivers understand the importance of taking care.
National law firm Irwin Mitchell has vast experience helping victims of road traffic accidents across the UK to gain answers over such incidents, including assisting those left with life-changing injuries to access funds which go towards supporting their recovery.
Elaine Russell, a Partner and serious injury specialist at the firm’s Glasgow office, said: “Through our work we have seen the huge consequences that road accidents can have on those involved, their families and also their local community.
“Because of this, it is very welcome to see the Scottish Government embracing the spirit of Road Safety Week and launching this campaign to tackle dangers on roads in rural areas.
“We would urge all road users to follow their lead and recognise the importance of travelling safely on such routes in order to not only keep themselves safe from harm, but other motorists and pedestrians too.
“Figures that more than 1,000 serious and fatal accidents happened on country roads last year are simply unacceptable and it is vital that everyone plays their part in improving safety.”
