Expert Urges NHS To Respond To Concerning Findings
A medical negligence specialist at Irwin Mitchell has called for the NHS to work quickly to address the serious problems raised in a new report on emergency surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons.
According to the organisation, a range of problems mean that many patients are potentially missing out on both early diagnosis of conditions, as well as care which could save their lives.
In the new report, it has called for more recognition of the need for improvements in service, as well as routine risk assessments and tailored management of patients and better use of critical care for high-risk patients.
Alison Eddy, a Partner and clinical negligence specialist at Irwin Mitchell, has welcomed the call for improvements and urged the NHS to react strongly by making urgent changes.
She outlined: “All patients deserve to have access to the best possible standard of treatment, but this report worryingly highlights that some of those in most need of such care are not getting vital support.
“Time and again we see the terrible impact that medical errors or substandard treatment can have on lives, often leaving victims with serious long-term problems from which they never fully recover.
“It is clear that questions need to be asked as to how the problems identified in this report have emerged, with a view to ensuring that they can be rectified in a manner which goes some way to preventing them from ever happening again.”
