Investigations Continue After Vehicle Leaves Road
Police are continuing to investigate after 12 passengers and the driver of a minibus were injured when the vehicle left the road in Cumbria on Saturday morning (December 10th).
Cumbria Police have revealed that the incident, which they have suggested was caused by ice and weather conditions, occurred on the A595 as the group of males aged between 18 and 20 were returning to Millom following a night out in Cockermouth.
All of those hurt in the incident were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.
David Urpeth, a Partner and injury specialist at Irwin Mitchell, who have represented many people injured on the roads, said that while there were plenty of questions surrounding the incident it also highlights the increasing risk on the roads in the winter.
He explained: “Investigations are ongoing in relation to this specific case, but incidents like this do demonstrate how dangerous the roads can be when the weather turns colder.
“Having seen first-hand the devastating injuries that road traffic accidents can cause, we would encourage drivers to take extra special care and attention over the next few months.
“It is also vital that local authorities take every step to ensure that they are meeting their responsibilities when it comes to road safety, including the proper maintenance of routes and the use of grit when weather and travel conditions become high-risk.”
