Verdict Of Industrial Disease Given In Inquest
An inquest into the death of a railway worker has demonstrated the devastating impact that asbestos exposure can have, according to a specialist at Irwin Mitchell.
A verdict of industrial disease was recorded in relation to the death of Chellaston man Jonathan Robinson, who was exposed to asbestos while working in a number of departments for British Rail in Derby.
The Derby Telegraph reports that the former railway worker was also involved in a project to put together information on handling asbestos, while his wife revealed he thought fibres were in the air at his workplace.
He died from bronchopneumonia in the middle of May this year, aged 73.
Irwin Mitchell act for people who have been exposed to asbestos in a variety of environments, as well as the loved ones of those who have died from related illnesses such as mesothelioma.
Adrian Budgen, a Partner and asbestos specialist at Irwin Mitchell, said: “This terrible case highlights the lasting impact that exposure to asbestos can have on a person’s health.
“It is also particularly sad to see that someone with expertise with handling asbestos could not be protected from the devastating risks it can pose.
“We see a number of cases similar to this in which people have been exposed to the material and suffered asbestos-related disease due to employers not recognising the terrible danger.
“It is vital that lessons are learnt from cases like this to ensure that no one else suffers in the same manner in the future.”
