HSE Informed Of Death
Police are investigating after a man in Dundee died hours after falling ill while working inside a chemical tank at an industrial estate.
The worker was taken to Ninewells Hospital after collapsing during work at Diamond Wheels Technologies at the Dryburgh Industrial Estate yesterday afternoon (August 18th), but died a short time after his arrival.
Two of his colleagues who helped him after his collapse were also taken to hospital for checks, while emergency services put an exclusion zone in place as they assessed the area for hazardous materials.
The Health and Safety Executive were informed and a report is set to be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
Elaine Russell, a Partner at Irwin Mitchell’s Glasgow office who specialises in helping those who have been injured or fallen ill at work, said: “It is vital that investigators work quickly to identify what happened in this case and why the man fell ill during the project.
“Other questions that will need to be answered include whether he was given adequate protective equipment and if other precautions were made to keep him safe from hazardous materials.
“Many of the cases we deal with have shown the dangers of chemicals in the workplace, as well as why employers need to every possible step to protect their workers from them. We hope that lessons can be learnt from this incident.”
